"During WWII, Fort Benning became home to the 555th Parachute Infantry Company, known as the ‘Triple Nickels’, from the 92nd Infantry (Buffalo) Division. Three buffalo nickels joined in a triangle or pyramid is the identifying symbol. Their training began in December 1943. Born within an army that had traditionally relegated Blacks to menial jobs and programmed them for failure, the "Triple Nickles" succeeded in becoming the nation’s first ‘all colored’ Parachute Infantry Test Platoon, Company, and Battalion."
